OBSERVING

BEST INNOVATION PRACTICES

IN THE MEDIA AND OTHER CCI

Observe

At Obi.media – The Observatory for media innovation we analyze multiple innovation practices in the media and other Portuguese cultural and creative industries, but also obstacles to their implementation, with the goal of enhancing the conditions for innovation and creativity.

Disseminate

We share the knowledge generated, in an open science perspective, making resources available and establishing platforms for joint reflection and dialogue, with effective impact on society. We are not a ghost observatory.

Intervene

We stimulate innovation by promoting research, we fight creative illiteracy, we suggest good practices, we co-create projects with industry and civil society. Innovation is only a solution from a responsible and sustainable perspective.

Recent

The many dimensions of the multiverse

Just as we already conduct much of our professional and social lives today in the midst of the Internet, so too will it be in the times of the multiverse.

News Coverage of Covid-19 Data – new report (only available in Portuguese)

The pandemic was also an opportunity for Portuguese journalism to invest on visual stories with mainly explanatory narrative strategies, giving meaning to the numbers, and reestablishing a bond with its audience.

Digital innovation in Portuguese museums – new report in digital format (only available in Portuguese)

This exploratory study seeks to analyze how innovation in the media manifests itself within the national museums managed by the Directorate General of Cultural Heritage (DGPC).

Our focus: innovation

The media and the other cultural and creative industries have, in their essence, creativity (individual talent), innovation (the ability to generate economic or social value), and technology (present in almost the entire cultural cycle).

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, in turn, recognizes the role of creativity and innovation in all dimensions of sustainability.

We are a transdisciplinary team, bringing together researchers, students, and industry professionals, driven by the premises of open science and innovation. We identify competencies, environments, and other conditions that enhance sustainable innovation and creativity, but also the obstacles to their realization, in several lines of research and intervention.

  • Narrative and editorial

In this category we consider innovation at the level of creativity in the use of content, concepts, formats, structures and genres.

  • Digital

We look in this category at the level of digitization and digital strategies, with respect to the use of platforms and formats.

  • Social and Inclusive

We included in this category a double look: innovation with a social purpose and aimed at people with specific needs, as well as public involvement strategies.

  • Financial and Sustainable

We look at innovative funding sources integrated into a business model based on the principles of sustainability at various levels.

Our Agenda: Impact

With our research and intervention we propose to achieve eight of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals defined by the 2030 Agenda. This is only possible with an integrative vision of the social sciences, the arts, technologies and engineering, and the humanities.

Underpinned by 18 commitments, we want to have, above all, a positive impact on the academic community, on professionals in the media and other cultural and creative industries (ICC), and on civil society.
