Divergente wins innovation award at Online Journalism Awards with “For you, Portugal, I swear!”
The multimedia report“Por ti, Portugal, eu juro!” won one of the Online Journalism Awards, in the category of excellence and innovation in digital visual storytelling for small newsrooms. The awards are attributed annually by the Online Journalism Association.
This research, which took place between 2016 and 2021, brings together stories of African Commands from Guinea organized in four chapters, who, during the Colonial War, were forced to fight alongside the Portuguese Armed Forces and then forgotten. The project’s website also features a mural – which is at the same time an online memorial – with the interviewees, but also other military personnel killed in combat or by firing squad, data visualizations that contextualize the user, and also the story behind the story.
Also in the category of excellence and innovation in digital visual storytelling, two more reports were recognized: Inside the Apocalyptic Worldview of ‘Tucker Carlson Tonight’, from The New York Times (large newsroom) and Mapping where the earth will become uninhabitable, from FUNKE Zentralredaktion – Interaktiv (medium newsroom). In total, the 2022 edition of the Online Journalism Awards attributed 55 awards.
